Wat Muang is best known for its Great Buddha of Thailand, a massive golden Buddha statue. The iconic statue is 305 feet (93 meters) tall, matching the scale and grandeur of the whole Wat Muang property, which spans 28 acres. To get to the Buddha, visitors can tour the temple and witness its many artifacts to learn more about the history of the site, which was established in 1687. Visiting this resplendent temple grants travelers greater insight into the history of Ayutthaya, Thailand’s original capital and spiritual stronghold. After exploring the temple, you’ll continue to the center of Ayutthaya.

Wat Muang
Wat Muang
Taking nearly 20 years to complete, Wat Muang, otherwise known as the Great Buddha of Thailand, stands an amazing 300 feet high, making it not only the tallest statue in Thailand, but the seventh-tallest in the world. The complex surrounding the giant glistening golden Buddha is both beautiful and informative, with the onsite museum exhibiting sacred objects, antiques and figures, as well as the first and largest silver holy Buddha image in Thailand. Elsewhere within the temple compound are vibrant depictions of heaven and hell, and Thai and Chinese paradises. There is also a series of statues narrating the gruesome history of the Thai-Burmese battle in Wiset Chai Chan.

Ayutthaya
Ayutthaya
Founded in 1350, Ayutthaya was the second capital of the Siamese Kingdom, which flourished until it was destroyed by the Burmese in the 18th century. Before its fall, Ayutthaya was one of the world’s largest and most cosmopolitan cities. Today, it’s a 289 hectare archaeological site recognized by UNESCO. At the 15th century Wat Ratburana, you’ll find a Khmer-style prang, and stairs leading down to a secret crypt with unrestored images of Buddha on the walls. At Wat Mahathat, the next temple over, you’ll find the iconic Buddha head stuck in the roots of a Banyan Tree - one of the most famous Thai images. The largest temple at Ayutthaya is Wat Phra Si Sanphet, otherwise known as ‘the Grand Palace’, which is best known for its three large chedis. Wat Lokaya Satha is another favourite for its 42-meter-long reclining Buddha Statue. Wat Chai Wattenaran, on the other hand, goes for quantity, with 120 Buddha statues throughout the grounds.

Know more about your day trip

Wat Muang is home to the largest Buddha statue in Thailand, standing at an impressive 92 meters tall. This golden seated Buddha, known as Phra Buddha Maha Nawamin, is visible from miles away. Your 1-hour visit gives you time to admire this magnificent statue, explore the temple grounds, and learn about its significance in Thai Buddhism.
The day trip allocates 1 hour for Wat Muang and 4 hours for Ayutthaya. This timing allows you to see the giant Buddha statue at Wat Muang before exploring Ayutthaya's historical highlights. Your driver will manage the schedule to ensure you have enough time at both locations while accounting for travel time between sites.
Wat Muang is located about 80 kilometers (50 miles) from Ayutthaya, approximately a 1-hour drive. Your private driver will handle the route planning, taking you from Bangkok to Wat Muang first, then to Ayutthaya, before returning to Bangkok. The entire journey is comfortable in an air-conditioned vehicle.
Photography is generally permitted throughout both sites, including the giant Buddha at Wat Muang and Ayutthaya's ruins. However, some specific indoor areas or museums might have restrictions. Always be respectful when photographing religious sites and follow any posted guidelines. Your 1-hour and 4-hour visits provide ample time for photos.
Budget approximately 50 THB for Wat Muang and 200-500 THB per temple in Ayutthaya Historical Park. Some temples in Ayutthaya offer combined tickets. These fees are not included in your Daytrip service and should be paid directly at each site. Having small denominations of Thai baht is recommended for smoother transactions.
This day trip presents some challenges for visitors with limited mobility. While Wat Muang has relatively flat pathways to view the giant Buddha, Ayutthaya's historical sites involve uneven surfaces, steps, and extensive walking. Your driver can assist with transportation between sites, but navigating within the ruins may be difficult without additional assistance.
Ayutthaya's temples showcase different architectural styles and historical significance. Wat Mahathat features the famous Buddha head in tree roots, Wat Phra Si Sanphet was the royal temple with distinctive bell-shaped stupas, and Wat Chaiwatthanaram represents Khmer-influenced architecture. Your 4-hour visit allows time to appreciate these unique characteristics and historical contexts.
