About your trip

In Amberg, you can walk the medieval city walls with their distinctive gates and towers that once protected this historic Bavarian trading town. The Market Square in Amberg is lined with beautiful patrician houses and features the town's unique "wedding house" with its striking Renaissance facade. Then make your way to Straubing to see how its Gothic St. Peter's Church dominates the skyline. While inside you'll find the remarkable burial monument of Duke Albrecht II. Straubing's annual Gaubodenvolksfest, one of Bavaria's largest folk festivals, transforms the city each August, but year-round visitors can explore the Roman treasures in the Gaubodenmuseum or stroll along the lovely Danube promenade.

Come and see what makes Amberg a great place to stop by. Many visitors begin at what is considered to be the symbol of the city — the famous sixteenth-century Stadtbrille gateway where the semi-circular arches cast reflections on the river to form the illusion of a pair of spectacles. Moving into the medieval town, many visitors head for the Marktplatz (the main square) where the Gothic town hall stands alongside colorful buildings. It is not unusual on a warm day to find both residents and tourists sat out in the square enjoying the sun. This small town, rich in culture and tradition has much to offer, with its large number of churches — many of which have been restored — a fascinating sculpture trail, the town walls and gates and of course, the world’s smallest hotel where it is said that couples spending their wedding night will live happily ever after and never divorce.

Straubing
There has been a settlement located at Straubing since Neolithic times and evidence of this long and varied history is apparent throughout the town. Roman artifacts and treasures can be viewed at the town's Gäubodenmuseum while St Peter's Church dates from the 12th century. Romanesque in design, it boasts two distinctive portals exquisitely sculptured. In 1218 part of the city known as 'new town' was constructed and nowadays this acts as the main shopping and dining out area in Straubing. The Town Hall and City Tower are equally stunning models of Gothic architecture, however perhaps the most iconic example is the Basilika St. Jakob. Particularly striking is the 16th century tower, with its sleek design and striking onion dome. The church also well known for its painted glass windows, showcased in four large panels dating from the 14th century.
