After arriving in Scone Palace, you'll have the freedom to explore the regal rooms and grounds before continuing on to Rosslyn Chapel, where you can observe the intricate stone carvings and legends, all at your leisure. Meanwhile your driver will wait for you near by, ensuring an stress-free return trip.
Scone Palace was founded as an early Christian church, which later developed into an Augustinian abbey, before becoming home to the Earls of Mansfield in 1600. Since at least the 9th century, Scone was the site of the coronation ceremony for Scottish monarchs, who would sit upon the legendary ‘Scone Stone’. The stone was captured by Edward I as spoils of war and taken to Westminster Abbey in 1296, where it is still used for royal coronations (though kept in Edinburgh Castle at all other times). The castle of today is an 18th century remodelling, where you can still walk the Long Galley where King Charles II strode to his coronation in 1661, inspect the needlework skills of Mary Queen of Scots in the bedhangings she worked while imprisoned on Loch Leven, and see the desk where Marie Antoinette composed letters, all of which are surrounded by a treasury of fine furniture and objets d'art. Founded in the mid-15th century, Rosslyn Chapel is an artistic masterpiece, with nearly every surface completely covered in intricate carvings, but it’s the strange symbolism that’s been captivating curious minds for centuries. One father-son duo believe the hundreds of intricately carved stone boxes protruding from the pillars represent the patterns formed by vibrating powder. There are also over 110 carvings of "Green Men", which might represent pagan deities, and shapes are said to be corn, even though Columbus hadn’t yet set sail for the New World. Then there’s the famed ‘Apprentice Pillar’, a masterfully carved column said to have been made by an apprentice mason who was murdered by his master in a fit of jealousy - as punishment the master’s face was carved in the opposite wall to forever gave upon his apprentice’s handiwork. However, the juiciest mystery is the chapel’s mysterious crypt and the secret Templar treasure, which could be anything from Jesus’ head to the original Scottish Crown Jewels.
