Split to Salona and Klis Fortress: Private day trip

The ruins are situated in today’s town of Solin, just a stone’s throw from Split. The city of Salona reached its peak under Emperor Diocletian (who was born in Salona), and built his palace in Split. Salona was leveled in 614 by the Slavs and Avars, leaving its impressive ruins behind. One of the most imposing ruins of the ancient city is the 2nd century amphitheatre, which was destroyed in the 17th century by the Venetians. At one time, the amphitheatre could hold 18,000 spectators. Another interesting site is the Manastirine, a burial place for early Christian martyrs. The Manastirine is part of the archaeological reserve which also includes the Tusculum Museum. You can also find the remains of a covered aqueduct, public baths, and ancient churches. A small museum near the entrance provides guests with informational pamphlets. Take time to wander the area and immerse yourself in the history of one of Croatia’s oldest towns.

Featured in the HBO hit and novel Game of Thrones, Klis Fortress is ready for its closeup. Boasting over 2000 years of history, with many pivotal moments and strongholds throughout the many different waves of rule, this fortress still stands tall today. Without ropes or locked doors, visitors are encouraged to explore with little distraction from big crowds. Take a few careful steps as you admire the olive trees and the Oprah tower.
