Budapest to Balaton Lake: Private day trip

Founded in 972 by High Prince Géza, who had a small stone castle built, the swampy surroundings protected it during the 13th century Mongol Invasion. Having survived unscathed, the town prospered during the 13th–15th centuries, with several palaces defensive walls being built. This new, regal city became the home of the Hungarian monarchy, seeing 43 kings crowned, and several buried at the now ruined Basilica of St. Stephen. Unfortunately, it didn’t fare as well in the following centuries, being sacked by Maximilian I, and falling under Ottoman rule. In the 18th century, under Habsburg rule, the town recovered, and several lavish new buildings erected. Today, visitors can still enjoy the historic old town’s Baroque atmosphere, as exemplified by the cathedral, episcopal palace, and city hall. The Black Eagle Pharmacy, with an ornately carved wooden interior is now a museum exhibiting many items accumulated over its 300 years of operation.

Balatonfuered’s reputation as the capital of Lake Balaton’s north shore dates back to 1772 when it was officially declared a spa. The naturally carbonated springs waters that can be drawn from wells here have been attracting visitors from around the world ever since, with Indian Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore coming here for treatment. A beautiful waterfront promenade was named in honor of the poet, offering beautiful views of the lake. Throughout the village itself, you can find 18th and 19th century buildings, including several mansions built by Hungarian nobility. The classicist Lajos Kossuth Spring House is a key stop on any visit, both for its elegant architecture, and for a chance to drink the famous mineral water.
