The Netherlands are perhaps best known for their wooden clogs, windmills, and being below sea level. Unlike much of the rest of the world, the Dutch utilize these windmills for water-maintenance, otherwise most of the country would be submerged. For over 1000 years, the distinctly Dutch system of dykes, windmills, and pumping stations has been in place. These 18th century windmills create one of the most iconic vistas in the Netherlands. Along with admiring the view, visitors can learn about the windmills history and operation through the two Museum Windmills, and in the Windmill Workshop, a guide explains how the windmills work and are maintained. Bruges
The former capital of Flanders, Bruges was one of the most culturally and economically advanced cities in Medieval Europe. This port city was home to the world’s first stock exchange, and in the 15th century, nobles, exiled kings, and some of the world’s best painters and weavers. Miraculously, Bruges survived World War I and II essentially unscathed, meaning that it looks today much as it did centuries ago. While the swan-filled canals, cobbled streets and medieval stone buildings are reason enough to visit, the UNESCO-listed town center also has some unmissable landmarks. Most famous is the 13th century belfry, which provides the best view of the town. At the 15th century Jerusalem's Church, you’ll find an unusual skull-themed altarpiece, while the Church of Our Lady is famed for its 'Madonna with child' sculpture by Michelangelo. Art-lovers won’t want to miss the Groeningemuseum, where you’ll find works by everyone from Jan Van Eyck to René Magritte.

Know more about your day trip

Kinderdijk is a UNESCO World Heritage site featuring 19 perfectly preserved 18th-century windmills in a stunning water management landscape. Unlike decorative or restored windmills elsewhere, these functioning structures showcase how the Dutch have managed water for centuries. Your 1.5-hour visit allows time to walk or cycle along the scenic dike paths, enter a museum windmill to see the living quarters, and learn about the ingenious polder system.
During your 4-hour visit to Bruges, prioritize the picturesque Markt (central square) with its iconic Belfry Tower, take a boat ride on the canals for unique perspectives of the medieval architecture, visit the Basilica of the Holy Blood, and explore the Groeningemuseum for its Flemish Primitive masterpieces. Allow time to sample Belgian chocolate, waffles, and beer, which are integral to the Bruges experience.
The journey from Amsterdam to Kinderdijk takes approximately 1.5 hours, while the drive from Kinderdijk to Bruges is about 2 hours. Return travel from Bruges to Amsterdam takes around 3 hours. Your private Daytrip driver handles all transportation, allowing you to relax and enjoy the changing landscapes of the Netherlands and Belgium. Border crossing between the countries is straightforward within the Schengen Area.
Walking the main path along the windmills takes about 30 minutes one-way, offering excellent photo opportunities. Bicycle rentals are available for covering more ground efficiently. For the best experience during your 1.5-hour visit, tour at least one interior museum windmill (Nederwaard or Blokweer) to understand how millers lived, and take the Hopper boat for unique water-level perspectives of the windmill network.
While ambitious, this day trip offers a worthwhile glimpse of one of Europe's best-preserved medieval cities. The 4-hour allocation in Bruges allows time to see the major highlights and experience the city's unique atmosphere. The journey showcases three different aspects of Benelux heritage: Dutch urban life, Dutch water management, and Flemish medieval architecture. Early departure is recommended to maximize daylight hours in both destinations.
Within your 4 hours in Bruges, prioritize sampling authentic Belgian chocolate from artisanal shops like Dumon or The Chocolate Line, enjoying a Belgian waffle (the Brussels-style rectangular waffle with toppings or the Liege-style denser waffle with caramelized sugar), and tasting a traditional Belgian beer at historical establishments like 2be or De Halve Maan Brewery. Belgian fries with various mayonnaise-based sauces are another quick local specialty.
Wear comfortable walking shoes and layered clothing as weather can vary, particularly near the windmills where it's often windier. Bring a camera, water bottle, and a light raincoat regardless of forecast. Have euros for both countries (credit cards are widely accepted but cash is useful for smaller purchases). Sun protection is essential at Kinderdijk where there's limited shade. A small day pack for purchases and essentials will be useful.
