Hermanus is a quiet seaside escape that still honors its fishing tradition. From June through December, Southern Right whales migrate here to mate, making Hermanus one of the best places in the world for whale-watching according to the WWF. You can book a whale watching boat trip, or just keep watch from shore (binoculars recommended). Regardless of the season, the walking trails on the cliffs outside of town offer stunning coastal views, and the chance to see a variety of plant and wildlife. In the town proper, you can visit the Old Harbour Museum to learn about the former whaling industry, or head to the Whale Museum to see a whale skeleton and special audio-visual presentation of whales and dolphins (run twice daily). Of course, as a fishing town, it’s a great place to enjoy fresh seafood, complemented by locally-produced wine.
