About Ljubljana

Only recently has Slovenia made its way onto tourist maps. When you travel from Venice to Ljubljana, you might not know much about Slovenia's largest city. Despite being the biggest in the land, it's still quite small, with under 290,000 locals residing here along the banks of the Ljubljanica River.

The city sits in the heart of Slovenia, a nation bordered by Austria in the north, the Adriatic Sea in the west, and Croatia to the south and east. Its geography was vital in shaping the culture and lives of locals today.

History of Ljubljana

Legend has it that the Greeks stole the golden fleece from King Aetes and traveled through the waterways of continental Europe. Once they reached Ljubljana, they disassembled their raft before carrying it to the nearby Adriatic Sea. However, a fire-breathing dragon stood in their way. And they were forced to slay it before continuing their journey.

Despite this legendary mention, there wasn't a permanent settlement here until 1144, and it wasn't until the 13th century that the rulers designated Ljubljana a city. The 19th century was the most prosperous period for Ljubljana, as the Habsburg Empire carefully decided to turn the city into a fairytale setting with Baroque and Neo-Renaissance architecture.

Far from its most successful timeframe, but arguably its most memorable, was the Yugoslavia era. Its small size compared with other cities meant it was underdeveloped and underfinanced. After the Nazi German occupation and the bloodshed of the civil wars, the city finally had the chance to thrive after the collapse of the communist state in 1992.

Modern Ljubljana

To the naked eye, the city appears to be an ancient Disney plot trapped in a time warp. Wide cobbled avenues wind the Old Town and flow parallel to the emerald-blue waters of its gushing river. The Ljubljana Castle dominates the city, giving the feeling that it's still in control today. And almost all of its rainbow-colored buildings date back centuries.

TripstAir, InfoBus, and Flixbus operate on this route, with the latter being the most popular carrier. All buses depart from Venice Mestre Station, but since signs and directions are scarce here, it's best to arrive 20–30 minutes in advance to locate the exact departure point.

Trains from Venice to Ljubljana

The train is not a common way for people to travel from Venice to Ljubljana. No direct trains are available, and it's longer and more expensive than the bus. It's usually only used by backpackers traveling through Europe with an Interrail pass.

The train from Venezia S. Lucia gives you more legroom than the bus. However, you must transfer at least once, usually at Trieste Airport. From here, it's just a scenic 2.5–3 hour ride to Ljubljana Train Station through the natural paradise of southern Slovenia.

“Nous voyageons de Philadelphie, en Pennsylvanie, à Venise, puis en Slovénie et en Croatie. Nous ne pouvions pas louer une voiture en Italie et la rendre en Croatie. Nous devions donc entrer en Slovénie pour louer la voiture. Nous avons donc utilisé mydaytrip.com pour réserver un transfert privé. C'est un peu comme un Uber - une application pour réserver un chauffeur en ligne. Très facile et conviviale, et vous pouvez ajouter des visites touristiques - l'application recommande des sites à ajouter. Nous n'avions pas le temps donc n'en avons pas ajouté, mais notre voyage a été excellent. Paiement par carte à l'avance, ils envoient une confirmation et une carte indiquant exactement où rencontrer le chauffeur. Il était là exactement à l'heure, nous a conduits à destination et nous a donné plein d'informations et de recommandations utiles en chemin. Nous l'utiliserons certainement de nouveau.”

“J'ai réservé un trajet en voiture privée de Venise à Ljubljana. La communication au préalable a été excellente, on m'a envoyé une confirmation avec les détails du chauffeur (Mirko) et le type de voiture, ce qui a rendu facile de le rencontrer le jour J. Mirko était un chauffeur/hôte fantastique. Il était amical, prêt à discuter tout au long du trajet, nous a beaucoup appris sur la Slovénie et a rendu le voyage très confortable et agréable. Mirko nous a même accompagnés jusqu'à notre logement à Ljubljana et nous a donné de super conseils de restaurants ! “Après quelques jours à Venise, nous avions besoin de rejoindre Ljubljana pour commencer notre visite. Il n'y avait malheureusement pas de moyen facile d'y parvenir. Nous avons donc essayé Daytrip. “La réservation avec Daytrip a été un jeu d'enfant. Notre trajet allait du port de Venise à l'aéroport de Ljubljana avec un arrêt à Miramare. Notre chauffeur/guide, Dragan J, a répondu très rapidement à nos messages avant le trajet. Avant de prendre la route, il a confirmé l'itinéraire et le temps que nous devions passer à Ljubljana, vérifiant si nous avions un vol à prendre (nous n'en avions pas), pour pouvoir nous conseiller. Il était très accommodant et patient dans ses réponses à nos questions pendant le voyage. Il nous a donné des informations très utiles que nous avons pu utiliser pendant notre séjour en Slovénie.
