Be ready for rain

Because of its tropical climate, La Fortuna sees a lot of rain. Bring good shoes that can stand against the mud, water, and puddles. We also recommend having a lightweight rain jacket or poncho for sudden showers. Packing a waterproof sunscreen is a lifesaver when you are enjoying the hot springs of La Fortuna as the sun can get strong during the day despite the rains.

Beware of mosquitoes

Taking a public bus from San Jose to La Fortuna is the cheapest option. The tickets can be purchased for 2,600 colones which is around $5 US. However, the bus does have several drawbacks. The bus is slower, taking around 4 hours to get to La Fortuna. Also, tickets are not available online so you'll need to buy them at the station. The bus departs only once a day at 8:40 AM, so you should be at the station an hour early to make sure you secure a ticket. Finally, the ride can be a bit uncomfortable considering the bus can be filled with up to 70 people and goes through hot and humid conditions.

San Jose to La Fortuna by a shared shuttle

Taking a shared shuttle to La Fortuna is the best balance between budget and comfort. It's faster than the bus, taking just 3 hours, and you'll be in a comfortable air-conditioned van with 7 people rather than 70. The shuttle departs at 7:45 AM and 1:00 PM, so you can travel in the afternoon instead. And to relieve a lot of stress, you can book tickets in advance online. Prices range from $42-$80 US depending on the season and demand.

San Jose to La Fortuna by rental car

If you plan to travel around Costa Rica and like being in complete control, you can rent a car and drive yourself from San Jose to La Fortuna. The drive takes between two to three hours depending on the traffic in San Jose. It might take longer than what your GPS shows you since you'll probably want to make some stops and will be driving more carefully than the local drivers who are used to the sharp turns and curves of the roads.

Don’t skip the hanging bridges

16 bridges are scattered around the Mistico Arenal Hanging Bridges Park, which gives you a perfect vantage to watch the birds, snakes, monkeys, and other park inhabitants as they go about their jungle business. The bridges are high off the ground and can swing in the wind, so this might not be the best activity if you're afraid of heights.

A really unique thing to do in La Fortuna is to take a night tour of some of the parks. “Nous avons été extrêmement satisfaits de la qualité du service que nous avons reçu de Day Trip. Nous avons effectué deux trajets avec Day Trip : le 31 août d’Athènes à Lefkada et le 7 septembre de Lefkada à Athènes. Les deux trajets comprenaient des arrêts sur des sites pittoresques en Grèce. Les deux chauffeurs étaient excellents et accommodants. Toutefois, nous aimerions particulièrement remercier Panos Peppas, qui a été notre chauffeur de Lefkada à Athènes. Transport sûr et à prix raisonnable

“Gonzalo de Daytrip était notre chauffeur et il était absolument incroyable. Il a tout fait pour nous retrouver car notre service mobile ne fonctionnait pas très bien. Il a attendu patiemment notre arrivée dans le hall afin de nous conduire du Tulum Dreams Resort à notre autre hôtel à Cancún, à une heure et demie de route près de l’aéroport, avant notre vol de retour. Il était poli, respectueux et aimable. Il s’est assuré que nous étions à l’aise pendant tout le trajet. Rapide et efficace. Je recommande cette entreprise, car trouver un trajet aller simple de Tulum à Cancún n’est ni facile ni bon marché, et cette entreprise offre un excellent service à un bon prix. “Marianna est venue nous chercher pour nous conduire de Héraklion à La Canée. Le temps était terrible et, à cause de cela, Marianna est arrivée avec quelques minutes de retard. Elle m’a contacté pour m’en informer. Marianna vit à La Canée et a rendu notre trajet très intéressant en nous parlant des choses locales à faire et à voir là-bas. Marianna conduit prudemment, et nous nous sommes tous sentis à l’aise avec sa vitesse et sa conduite sous une pluie battante. C’est une personne charmante qui parle couramment anglais. Un excellent moyen de voyager et de voir des sites en chemin

“Nous ne savions pas à quoi nous attendre avec ce voyage et avons réservé depuis l'Australie. Nous cherchions initialement un moyen facile de voyager de Grenade à Malaga. Nous avons décidé de ne pas perdre l'opportunité de voir quelque chose en plus en chemin. Miguel a certainement dépassé nos attentes. Son anglais était excellent (malheureusement, nous parlons très peu espagnol), et il était très amical et serviable. Nous avons beaucoup apprécié entendre parler des régions que nous traversions et aussi discuter de certaines coutumes locales. Miguel nous a emmenés à Antequera comme prévu et s'est assuré que nous puissions facilement obtenir nos billets pour les attractions sans nous sentir pressés. Nous avons été pris en charge et déposés ponctuellement et avons vraiment apprécié notre voyage. Nous espérons retourner en Espagne et pouvoir utiliser ce service à nouveau un jour.”

Super site pour réserver un transport, très facile

“Vraiment super site, je le recommande vivement si vous cherchez un long transport. Vous payez pour la commodité et pour pouvoir réserver à votre propre rythme, à l'avance et ne pas avoir à attendre les transports en commun. Nous avons réservé 3 trajets au Costa Rica : San José à La Fortuna, La Fortuna à Manuel Antonio, Manuel Antonio à San José. La communication avant et pendant le voyage était excellente, très facile. Notre chauffeur pour le premier et le dernier trajet était César Matamoros, il était génial ! Il parlait anglais et espagnol et connaissait très bien le pays. Nous avons beaucoup appris de lui ! Notre autre chauffeur pour le deuxième voyage s'appelait Jason et il parlait principalement espagnol. Nous avons ajouté un arrêt pendant le trajet dans un beau jardin et il nous a attendu pendant que nous explorions. Et il a ajouté un arrêt bonus pour nous au pont des crocodiles !”
