Settled since the Neolithic Age, the ancient city of Bath was aptly named after its famous hot springs, which made the city a popular destination for the ancient Romans. During the 18th and 19th centuries, the city was rebuilt and remodelled in the elegant Georgian Style, and spread over the surrounding hills to create a ‘garden city’. Jane Austen lived in Bath between 1801 and 1806, and though she apparently never liked the city, she used it as the setting for 2 of her novels. Bibliophiles can head o the Jane Austen Centre, where guides in period costume and a Regency tearoom bring her era to life. The grand Georgian architecture, particularly at the Circus and Royal Crescent, made Bath the destination for 18th century society. The Roman Baths are another unmissable attraction, giving visitors a look back in time, and providing a unique vantage of Bath’s stunning Gothic Abbey.
