Lyndhurst
This striking Gothic Revival manor is right out of an English ghost story - which explains why it was featured in the classic Dark Shadows.
About
Designed by Alexander Jackson Davis, the driving force behind Gothic Revival architecture in America, Lyndhurst Mansion was owned by everyone from the 58th mayor of New York to robber baron Jay Gould. Nicknamed "Paulding's Folly" for its fanciful and not-at-all pragmatic design that includes fanciful turrets and asymmetrical outline, the manor’s interior is equally romantic, with narrow hallways, small and sharply arched windows, and fantastically peaked, vaulted, and ornamented ceilings. And the heavy, intricately carved furnishings wouldn’t look out of place in a haunted English castle. After exploring the manor, walk through the beautiful landscape park, designed in the naturalistic style with lawns, foreign trees and even a conservatory.
