Only accessible by ferry, this island retreat was built more as a ‘Temple to Fame’ rather than a residence. As expected of the man known as ‘Bavaria’s fairytale king’, the stunning interior is pure extravagance, boasting the most opulent of décor. While you'll pass through room after decadently-decorated room, nothing can truly prepare you for the sight that is the Great Hall of Mirrors, an amazing 1,000 feet ‘tunnel of light’ that runs the entire length of the garden and is an almost perfect copy of the Galerie des Glaces in Versailles. Once you have your breath back from this show of affluence, come back down to earth with a visit to the Ludwig II Museum that contains fascinating artifacts from the reign of one of history’s more eccentric characters, and humble yourself at the Augustinian canon seminary with its abbey buildings. Default stop time is for the ferry ride and tour - if you'd like to linger a little longer, just add some time!

Know more about your day trip

Herrenchiemsee Palace is King Ludwig II's opulent tribute to Versailles, featuring a magnificent Hall of Mirrors that's even longer than the original. Built on an island in Bavaria's largest lake, this unfinished palace showcases exceptional rococo splendor with gilded walls, marble floors, and intricate frescoes.
You'll take a scenic 20-minute boat ride from Prien am Chiemsee to reach Herreninsel island. Boats run regularly throughout the day, and the journey across Bavaria's largest lake offers beautiful Alpine views and a chance to spot sailboats.
Yes, it's a pleasant 15-minute walk through forest trails from the boat landing to the palace. Alternatively, you can take a horse-drawn carriage for a more romantic arrival, though expect longer wait times during peak season.
Yes, the palace interior can only be visited on guided tours lasting about 30 minutes. Tours are available in multiple languages and showcase the lavishly decorated rooms including the famous Hall of Mirrors and the Wishing Table.
Early morning or late afternoon tours typically have fewer visitors. The palace is open year-round, with winter visits offering a more intimate experience and potential snow-covered scenery enhancing the fairytale atmosphere.
Besides the New Palace, you can explore the King Ludwig II Museum, the Augustinian Monastery with its baroque architecture, and the palace gardens. The island also offers peaceful walking paths and spots for photography.
Allow 4-5 hours total including boat travel, palace tour, and time to explore the grounds and museum. The island offers a restaurant if you'd like to enjoy lunch with lake views before returning to the mainland.
Comfortable walking shoes are essential for the forest path and palace tours. Bring a camera for the stunning lake and palace views, and dress warmly in cooler months as the boat ride and island can be quite chilly.
