Costa Rica's dry season from December to April offers the best weather for outdoor activities. However, La Fortuna is visitable year-round with its tropical climate. The green season (May-November) brings lush landscapes and fewer crowds, though afternoon rains are common. Temperatures remain consistently warm throughout the year.

Costa Rica uses the Costa Rican colon (CRC), though US dollars are widely accepted in tourist areas. Credit cards work in most hotels and restaurants, but cash is preferred for smaller establishments and local markets. ATMs are available, and many dispense both colones and US dollars.

Spanish is the official language of Costa Rica. English is commonly spoken in tourist areas, hotels, and adventure tour companies, especially around La Fortuna due to its popularity with international visitors. Basic Spanish phrases are helpful for authentic local interactions.

Popular excursions include Cortez Falls and Macaw Haven, La Fortuna Waterfall and Los Chorros Falls, and visits to Arenal Volcano National Park. These trips showcase Costa Rica's incredible biodiversity, pristine waterfalls, and wildlife rehabilitation centers.

La Fortuna is generally very safe for visitors with low crime rates. The town caters heavily to eco-visitors and adventure travelers. Standard precautions like not leaving valuables unattended and staying on marked trails during nature activities are recommended. Wildlife encounters require following guide instructions carefully.

Pack lightweight, quick-dry clothing, waterproof gear for activities near waterfalls, comfortable hiking shoes with good grip, and insect repellent. Bring sunscreen, a reusable water bottle, and binoculars for wildlife viewing. A waterproof bag for electronics is essential during outdoor adventures.

La Fortuna offers incredible wildlife viewing opportunities including howler monkeys, sloths, toucans, and colorful poison dart frogs. The area is home to over 850 bird species and serves as a corridor between different ecological zones. Professional guides enhance wildlife spotting experiences significantly.

Juan Santamaria International Airport (SJO) in San Jose is the main airport, located about 81 miles (130 km) from La Fortuna. The drive takes approximately 3 hours through scenic mountain roads. Some travelers also use Liberia Airport (LIR), which is slightly closer but with fewer international connections.
