Denpasar to Ulun Danu Beratan Temple and Goa Gajah: Day trip

Built on the shores of Lake Beratan, 1500 meters above sea-level, Ulun Danu Beratan Temple was founded in the 16th century in honor of the Goddess Danu, queen of water, lakes and rivers. The temple complex seen today was built in 1633 with a combination of Hindu and Buddhist architectural styles. Walking the temple grounds, visitors are treated to some beautiful buildings and sculptures, but the centerpiece is undoubtedly the Pura Puncak Mangu. Built on a small island, this shrine dedicated to Shiva seems to float on the lake - an image made even more magnificent by the often-misty mountains in the background. Visitors can even rent swan-shaped paddleboats to head out onto the lake and appreciate the temple from another angle.

Goa Gajah, literally the ‘Elephant Cave’, is an enigma even by Bali’s standards. The cave was rediscovered by Dutch archaeologists in 1973, and though its origins are unknown, it’s believed to date back to the 11th century. Local tradition on the other hand says it was created by legendary giant Kebo Iwa. Instead of the image of an elephant you’d expect based on the cave’s name, the entrance is actually a screaming demon in a sea of flames, with the open mouth acting as the cave’s entrance. Despite the intimidating portal, inside the cave is a place of serenity where religious offerings were left. Within the T-shaped tunnel, you’ll find carvings depicting Shiva’s linga and yoni, as well as his elephant-headed son Ganesh, which are said to be some of the oldest Hindu icons in Bali.
