The Ljubljana Dragon is depicted around the city on its coat of arms, flag, and many local emblems. The dragon is associated with the legend of Jason and the Argonauts, who supposedly slew a dragon in the marshes where Ljubljana now stands. Another story links it to Saint George, the dragon-slayer.

Tickets should be bought in advance for these buses, as it is a popular route in the summer.

Budapest to Ljubljana by train

Hungarian Railways (MAV) has direct trains once per day from Budapest-Kelenfold to Ljubljana’s main train station. They leave at 9:07 AM, and you can be in Ljubljana by 5:00 PM. The trip takes about 7.5 hours, and tickets are between $26 and $35 (€24-€32). Due to the limited number of trains, we advise booking tickets in advance to avoid any disruption to your vacation plans.

If you are traveling in the summer, Interrail has night trains with sleeper cars so you can get a full night’s rest. These trains are not as cheap as the daytime options, but have the option of booking a sleeper cabin so you are fully rested for Ljubljana.

Things to do when you get to Ljubljana

After your trip from Budapest to Ljubljana, be sure to have dinner at one of Ljubljana’s many restaurants serving local cuisine. As you walk around the city after your meal, try to count the number of dragons you come across! Start in Preseren Square

This central square is named after a Slovenian poet, France Preseren. It’s a bustling pedestrian area with beautiful architecture, including the iconic pink Franciscan Church of the Annunciation. From Preseren Square, you can head south and east along the Ljubljanica River or north and west into the old town.

Walk across the Triple Bridge

Designed by the famous Slovenian architect Jože Plečnik, the Triple Bridge is one of Ljubljana’s most recognizable landmarks and connects Prešeren Square to the old town. Its three converging paths connect the city over the Ljubljanica River.

Try to escape Ljubljana Castle

Across from Preseren Square, perched on a hill overlooking the city, Ljubljana Castle offers panoramic views, historical exhibits, and a museum. You can reach it by funicular, walking, or cycling. You can even do an escape room with friends!

“Dies war unsere erste Erfahrung mit einem Fahrdienst in Europa und es war eine großartige Erfahrung! Darko V. kam etwas früher in unserem Hotel in Budapest an, und wir sahen ihn, sodass wir etwas früher losfahren konnten als geplant. Darko versorgte uns mit einer Flasche stillen Wassers, was sehr geschätzt wurde. Der Van war sehr komfortabel und sauber, und unsere Reise nach Ljubljana war angenehm. Darko machte einen Stopp für uns, um die Toilette zu benutzen, was bei einer vierstündigen Fahrt notwendig war und geschätzt wurde. Darko war ein ausgezeichneter Fahrer, sehr angenehm und spielte angenehme Musik im Van. Wir kamen etwa zur erwarteten Zeit in unserem Hotel in Ljubljana an. “Unser Fahrer Michal traf uns früh in der Lobby unseres Gebäudes. Er half uns mit dem Gepäck, und wir hatten einen angenehmen Transfer von Ljubljana nach Budapest. Es gab überhaupt keine Probleme. “Gergery fuhr unsere sechsköpfige Familie von Budapest nach Ljubljana in einem sehr komfortablen Van (es war eine 4 1/2-stündige Fahrt). Er hatte sogar für jeden von uns Wasser für die Reise dabei. Fantastischer persönlicher Fahrer ab Budapest

“Dies war das erste Mal, dass wir einen persönlichen Fahrer nutzten, und wir entdeckten Daytrip bei einer Online-Suche. Wir mussten von Budapest nach Ljubljana, Slowenien, und die Züge und/oder Busse waren kompliziert und hätten zu viel Reisezeit in Anspruch genommen. Unser Fahrer Lucas war hervorragend und sprach Englisch! Er kam pünktlich zu unserem Hotel zur Abholung, stellte sich vor und wir machten uns auf den Weg zu einer angenehmen und sicheren Reise. Wir schätzten es, dass kein Radio lief und er eine sehr professionelle, aber dennoch zugängliche Art hatte. Wir konnten ihm Fragen über unsere Umgebung stellen und von seinem Wissen über die Gegend, die wir besuchten, profitieren. Sein Auto war sehr annehmbar und sehr sauber! Großartige Transferoption

“Meine Frau organisierte einen Transfer von Budapest nach Ljubljana für uns und einen Freund, mit dem wir unterwegs waren. Unser Fahrer Atilla holte uns pünktlich an unserer Unterkunft ab und nahm den Koffer meiner Frau für sie. Atilla hatte uns drei schnell im Auto untergebracht und Wasserflaschen für die Fahrt bereitgestellt. Wir fuhren über Maribor und Celje und machten in beiden Städten eine einstündige Pause, um uns die Beine zu vertreten und einige Sehenswürdigkeiten zu besichtigen. Atilla war fantastisch und begleitete uns auf unserer Besichtigungstour, da es sein erstes Mal in beiden Städten war. Wir wurden pünktlich an unserem vorgesehenen Zielort abgesetzt, ohne Probleme. “Wir buchten eine Fahrt mit Daytrip für unseren Transfer von Ljubljana nach Budapest. Die Fahrt dauert etwa vier Stunden, und bevor wir losfuhren, dachten wir, es könnte lang und ermüdend werden; wir lagen falsch! Reise von Ljubljana nach Budapest

“Ich bin so froh, dass ich von diesem Unternehmen gehört habe. Die Fahrt mit dem Zug oder Bus hätte den ganzen Tag gedauert, anstatt der 4-5 Stunden Fahrt mit Daytrip. Die Fahrt von Ljubljana nach Budapest mit Fahrerin Judit war ausgezeichnet. Sie war eine großartige Fahrerin, kam früh zur Abholung und gab uns viele tolle Informationen über Budapest.
